DBT Therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a form of therapy that was originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT combines standard cognitive behavioural techniques for emotional regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness largely derived from Buddhist meditative practice. Research has shown that DBT is also effective in treating patients who present varied symptoms and behaviors associated with mood disorders, including self-depression anxiety and self harming injury. DBT strives to have the patient view the therapist as an ally rather than an adversary in the treatment of psychological issues. Accordingly, the therapist aims to accept and validate the client’s feelings at any given time, while, nonetheless, informing the client that some feelings and behaviors are maladaptive, and showing them better alternatives. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychological intervention that provides swift relief from emotional distress attached to memories. It is highly efficacious, removing symptoms that may have been lifelong, in a far shorter time than many other interventions. EMDR can be used for just about any memory that has negative feelings associated with it. EMDR works quickly and utilises aspects of many successful psychological interventions, adding in the element which assists the brain to process the information (memory) more fully through bi-lateral stimulation (both sides of the brain communicating). This bi-lateral stimulation allows the brain to process the disturbing memory so that it is no longer stuck and is integrated in a functional way, allowing the individual to continue with their lives unimpeded by the memory. It is a well-established treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its use is endorsed by many governments across the globe for … (more...)

Gottman Method Couples Therapy was developed out of research to help couples: Increase respect, affection, and closeness Break through and resolve conflict when they feel stuck Generate greater understanding between partners Keep conflict discussions calm Research shows that to make a relationship last, couples must become better friends, learn to manage conflict, and create ways to support each other’s hopes for the future. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a form of talking therapy that combines cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy. It focuses on how you think about the things going on in your life – your thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes (your cognitive processes) – and how this impacts on the way you behave and deal with emotional problems. It then looks at how you can change any negative patterns of thinking or behaviour that may be causing you difficulties. In turn, this can change the way you feel. CBT tends to be short, taking six weeks to six months. You will usually attend a session once a week, each session lasting either 50 minutes or an hour. Together with the therapist you will explore what your problems are and develop a plan for tackling them. You will learn a set of principles that you can apply whenever you need to. You may find them useful long after you have left therapy. CBT may focus on what is going on in the present rather than the past. However, the therapy may … (more...)

Weight Loss Counselling

Counselling to specifically target weight-loss is not a new concept. There is no shortage of weight loss support groups, online programmes, diet “clubs” (with or without the expensive food), and even magazines specifically about weight loss, all aimed at teaching those who struggle with their weight, how to eat and exercise. But do you really need to be taught that? You probably know it all anyway. Most people who have weight issues are more than a little informed about what to eat and how to exercise effectively – many of these people have tried a plethora of different eating and exercise plans, in their search for that ideal weight. Success is often found with these traditional methods, but many people find it doesn’t last. Then they might start berating themselves for giving up, going back to old habits, not sticking to the programme – Until they start a new diet/regime and begin the cycle again. And then they stop. The weight comes back on. They berate themselves once again, and … (more...)
